Because of COVID-19, so many parts of our lives are changing. We’re getting adjusted to working from home, wearing masks, and not seeing our friends and family members in person. With so many variables out of our control, it’s time to focus on something we can control: our oral health. A dentist in Denton is here with three valuable tips to take care of your teeth and gums during these trying times.
Brush Twice a Day
Whenever you eat, particles of food mix with the bacteria naturally present in your mouth to form plaque. Although this process is completely natural, too much plaque can contribute to oral health problems like gingivitis and tooth decay. This is especially dangerous when plaque hardens (which occurs after not being brushed or flossed away for a day) into a substance called tartar, also known as calculus. Once plaque has calcified into tartar, your toothbrush can’t clean it away. At that point, it can only be removed by a dental professional. To prevent it from reaching that point, brush your teeth every morning and right before bed.
Floss Daily
Many people don’t floss as often as they should, and many more forget to do it altogether. However, flossing is the only way to remove plaque from along your gumline and between your teeth. When you neglect to floss, bacteria get trapped in the spaces between your teeth, causing seriously bad breath. Not only that, but flossing can help prevent gum disease. Since gum disease has been linked to other conditions like diabetes and heart disease, you’re going to want to avoid it at all costs.
Maintain a Healthy Diet
By frequently indulging in sugary foods and beverages, you put the health of your teeth and gums at risk. Drinking coffee, sodas, and energy drinks can bathe your teeth in sugar. Not to mention, it can turn your pearly whites yellow. Opt for water, milk, or tea to quench your thirst instead. Similarly, limit your exposure to sugary foods like candies. Bacteria in your mouth love to feed on this sugar and create a destructive waste product that causes cavities.
Being under quarantine is a strange time for everyone. The last thing you need to deal with right now is a dental emergency caused by poor oral hygiene. Keep these tips in mind to help you get through this!
